I am so sorry to hear of Ken's death - I am from the Sault and remember when I was young going to see an exhibition of Ken's and just loving the detail - reviewing his paintings on the site has reminded me of just how they have all stayed familiar. My mom was an artist, late in her life, and also very much loved Ken's work. I like to think they are discussing art on the 'other side'.

Condolences to all.

Please accept my heartfelt condolances on the loss of this great Canadian artist. His art helped me identify with what is is to be Canadian. Although Ken did not believe in "coincidences" we were in email contact just 3 weeks ago after a 32 year hiatus and now I am forever grateful for this chance to experience once again what a warm generous and talented man he was. His memory will forever live with us.

I am so saddened by the news of Ken's passing. I just recently watched a wonderful Biography of his life and found new inspiration from it for my own work. What a fabulous talent that I dont feel was quite treated as well as he should have been in the Canadian 'art scene'

My condolences to Ken's family and indeed all of Canada on such a tragic loss.

I had the pleasure of meeting Ken and his wife Gillian a number of years ago at a beautiful place called Hornby Island in BC. They often summered there and we shared many meals and libations together. Ken was warm, thoughtful, and insightful as well as superlatively talented. My heart goes out to Gillian and the family he leaves behind.

You passed in just the fashion you would have wanted...living life and enjoying the splendour that our grand country has to offer. Prayers and thoughts are with you and your loved ones.

I am truly saddened by the passing of a great Canadian artist. My deepest sympathies.

I was canoeing across North Tea Lake on the Sunday afternoon that Ken passed. When I arrived at the park access point, just as the sun had set, I was met by an ambulance that was waiting to pick up an unknown person that had sadly died in the park. That person, as it turns out, was not unknown, he was a true spirit of Canadian culture.

Having spent the most glorious weekend in Algonquin Park, with the fall colour at its full glory, one should take small comfort in the fact that he passed in one of the most wonderful places this country has to offer and that his spirit will always travel the waterways, lakes and trails of that great park.

My thoughts are with his family and friends.

A framed print of Ken Danby's "At the Crease" has been a treasured possession of mine since high school. It is hard to describe the emotional attachment I feel to that picture, and harder still with the news of his death. As a native of Guelph, I have always been immensely proud of Ken Danby's connection to the city of my birth. Like Tom Thomson and the Group of Seven in their time, Ken Danby never received the respect due him by the art establishment. However, the public's embrace of his body of work demonstrates beyond question that he was and is the people's artist.

There have been many great artists in Canada, but none have truly captured what it is to be Canadian. Ken is the only person who has done so through his landscapes and through his love of our great game.

I met Ken and Gillian in St.Maarten several years ago and was fortunate enough to spend a little time with them. St.Maarten was one of their favorite places to visit and Ken did several paintings there including his spot on "Dawn Beach". I found Ken to be very generous of spirit, a man of no pretentions, open, insightful, humourous and a great listener. He was geniunly interested in what you had to say. The news of his passing is a great shock to Kim and I. Canada has lost one of its greatest visionaries who's art has defined Canada over the last 40 years and will continue to define it into the future.
Kim and I can only wish Gillian and Ken's sons our deepest condolances for their loss.

I was shocked to hear of Ken Danby's sudden death at what I believe is too early an age. There is so much work we are going to not going to be able to enjoy as a result. But I appreciate his production and work efforts to give us what he did.
Mr. Danby loaned the Bruce County Museum some original art work and also his own personal skates that are the subject matter of one of his early watercolors for a hockey exhibit that we hosted. He pleasantly surprised us by attending the opening of the exhibit in Southampton and encouraged me to pursue my own art as well. I am doing so, thanks to his encouragement. Many sympathies to the family. Lambertus DeGraaf

I discovered Ken Danby back in the early 1970's. I too had exited art school after two years for many of the same reasons Ken left O.C.A.. Being a realist painter myself, I so appreciated Ken's artistic vision and technical expertise. Ken's work has always been an inspiration and impetus for me to stand fast in my own foot prints in the realm of visual art. I was never so thrilled as the day I took my husband and young children to Ken's show at the Joseph Carrier Centre in North York. I had the priviledge of meeting Ken and realizing that he was as genuine and personable as his paintings reflected him to be. I will remain forever grateful for the gift to this world of Ken Danby and his masterful exercise of his vocation. This world is forever diminished by the loss of this great man and artist. Although his life was unfortunately cut too short, his spirit will shine on through his family and his works. My sincere condolences are extended to his family and friends.

Heartfelt sympathy to family, colleagues and close friends.

I am taken aback by how this has affected me. I am just someone (one of many) who followed and appreciated his art. The grief is reminiscent of how I felt when hearing about Terry Fox. 'Oh, no!'

As a young 21 year woman with a first job, I scraped together the money to buy #34/100 of 'Sunning'. At the time I questioned my judgement of spending almost 3 month's salary on something that I just loved....not needed. I have never regretted the decision and only wish I could have expanded my collection beyond the reproductions I purchased after 'Sunning'.

Oddly, on Sunday morning I felt compelled to move 'Sunning' from the spot it has hung for the past three years back to its original spot where it had hung for over 30 years previously.

Thank you Mr. Danby for being prolific. Your art has touched and will continue to touch so many.

I sat beside Ken in grade 4 at Cody. We went in one class through kindergarten to grade 8. He was always drawing. Also his Mom was a great knitter and he wore the nicest sweaters to school. He lived on North St. and the shed at the back of his home was painted by him and helped I believe by his brother Marvin. He had a wonderful family. I remember him winning a 'Big Award' for his drawings at Cody and all of us were so proud of him. I have the 1976 serigraphs of the 4 olympic atheletes, 3 plates of the black dog, the winter bobsled and the young boy balancing himself on a log which I will NEVER part with as he had such a profound impact on us at Cody. I know the 'Soo' feels very very proud of him. May his creative spirit thrive in the heavens forever.

I am so very sorry to hear of Ken's death. In the early 1980s, when I worked at UNICEF in Toronto, Ken was invited to be Honorary Chairman of the campaign. His painting of Noah as a little boy was a UNICEF card that year. As he worked tirelessly during the campaign, Ken was a most generous and gracious person to everyone he met, giving freely of himself at the many events organized. I have never forgotten his commitment and dedication to ensuring the success of the campaign. Seeing first hand what a truly fine person he was in addition to his unparalleled artistic gifts was stunningly impressive. My thoughts are with all of his beloved family members. Ken Danby to me was not just a great Artist, he was an inspiration. It was a chance encounter with Ken Danby many years ago that kindled a desire to pursue Art as a gallerist. I remember only being remorseful that I loved art so deeply, yet I had not even the ablility to draw a stick figure. The reply stayed with me, "..what would a hockey team be without someone to wave the pennant..." As we celebrate the aniversary of my gallery in Montreal, I have strived to stay true to this by following the inspiration of a great leader. We are not a great gallery, we are a Gallery of Great Artists. I thank you as Ken's family and friends for his enduring gift to me. Even more sad that artists still need to be accepted by the powers that be to be really known. Although they can make you as an aclaimed artist, they cannot take away the love, appreciation and respect one gets from people. Keep on beating.

The Sept 25th newspaper clipping of Ken's death sits on my desk, I see it everyday. That news absolutely devastated me, and it breaks my heart that we have lost such an incredible guy. A couple of years back I wrote a note to OCA about being a second year student when Ken was the Judge of Kangaroo Ccourt during OCA Initiation in the 1950's, and it was apparently read at the event honouring him. His incredible presence was evident then and he will be sorely missed by all who were fortunate enough to have known him. His humility was unbelievable, he was the absolute best Super-realist using Egg-Tempra at the College and he had no sense of himself as a genius.
We all knew we were in the company of greatness at OCA in the late 50's
Bless you all, your loss is huge.
My son is now 38, but was a carded Goalie as a child so "In the Crease" was especially touching for all of the Grand Family.
We all share the incredible pain and are thankful he died as he lived, enjoying Canada.

Dear Danby Family,
I really find it difficult to express in words how Ken's art left an impact on my own work. I've flipped through the "New Decade" Book so many times that some of the pages have detached from the binding. I was fortunate enough to see one of his solo shows at The Bernarducci-Meisel Gallery in New York City in the fall of 2003.

I am deeply sadden by his untimely passing, and when I browsed through his 3 books I have of his work, it hits me even harder.

My condolences to the entire family. Even though we had never met, I had watched an interview he did with Pamela Whallen and his "Life & Times" documentary so many times, that I felt a connection with his art work, philosophies and the man he was.

I was sadden to hear about Ken's death. I was fortunate enough to meet Ken at his studio in 2005. It was an honor that day to meet a true Canadian Icon.

Hello Gillian,We were so sorry to hear of Ken's death, first on the news, then again in the Acerage Life magazine, this winter. My husband Jim, a veterinarian and actor, and I share a wonderful memory of you both. When Brian Mulroney left office, he hosted a large farewell party/show in Ottawa, incorporating numerous Canadians in the Arts. Because Jim had a role in the Canadian TV series, E.N.G., he was invited to do an introduction. In the airport coming home, were you and Ken. You had privileges to enter the Air Canada First Class lounge. We didn't,but you invited us to join you there! We were thrilled, not only by being able to relax in the lounge, but, more importantly, to be able to share some time and conversation with you. You spoke about Armstrong Mill, enjoying your hot tub, your families, the land. Ken gave us a flyer about his new work, "Bobby Orr, Gardens of Dreams". It was a wonderful, magical time for us, that we never forgot. Thank you again, and our sincere condolences. Jim and Diane Millington.

I was a young swimmer with the Barrie Swim Team in 1983, when Ken Danby was commissioned to paint a triad of paintings for the Allendale Heights recreation centre. The practice was, if you’ll excuse the pun, a bit of a washout, as only two of us showed; myself and another girl. My swimming talents were mediocre at best, but my teammate was the uncontested star of the team with reams of first place finishes under her cap. It wasn’t a surprise that Mr. Danby snapped more photos of her than me, but I do distinctly remember him snapping pictures of me as I took breaths swimming the breaststroke. When the painting was displayed, it was my mother who noticed that the swimmer’s face was mine. I was very shy then, and I never mentioned this to anyone on the team, but I must admit it was a thrill to look up at that painting and see my own face. Better than a first place ribbon.

I come from a background of artists. My Aunt is a well known Canadian Portrait artist. She knew Mr. Danby personally. I was introduced to him when i was a young man, just beginning my art journey. Through his paintings i learned that Mr. Danby was a gifted artist, but more than that he was a mentor. His paintings gave me such inspiration that i was fueled to continue on my path. His great works of art will live on. His memory as well. We have lost a great person, a great artist and a great spirit. My heartfelt condolences to the Danby family.
