I hadn't seen Gordon for many years, so that when I eventually did, during a surprise performance, I was most impressed by his rejuvenated appearance. Afterwards, we chatted and I commented that I'd certainly like to consider doing a portrait. A few days later, he called and asked if I was serious about the idea. I was, and we arranged for him to visit and pose for me outside my studio. I wanted to include the natural setting to reflect his concerns for the environment, as well as to take advantage of mother nature's 'stage lighting'.
