It's June 21st, the longest day of the year and the time when the sun provides the celestial marking of the definitive beginning of summer - the summer solstice. As it happened, I was in Georgian Bay on a marvellous island of exposed granite with majestic pine trees shaped over time by the westerly winds.
While I was aware of the date, I had no preconceptions that I would be responding to its significance. It was the experience of seeing the sunset slowly develop in front of me with the large white pine silhouetted against the sky that inspired my interest. The realization that it had just become The Summer Sun certainly confirmed it for me.
